31 Grace-Full Days: Day 2 – Coffee

It’s not often that I get up in the morning at the same time as my daughter. Today, after blowing off my 6:00 a.m. alarm and bike ride, I got up at 7:00 a.m. and met my daughter in the kitchen. I had turned the Keurig on to get ready to make a cup of coffee, then started in on something else in the kitchen.

Caran came down, got a cup, grabbed a K-cup, then looked at me and said, “Do you want coffee mom?” I said, “I’ll get some after you.”

She then proceeded to get a second cup and make me a cup of coffee before making her own. That is the first time ever my daughter has made ME coffee.

I’m not sure how we got to this place, where my daughter became taller than me, old enough to get up on her own, make her own coffee and breakfast and drive off to school and work without me. I know it was a gradual process. I am certain that I blinked and she was all grown up. But the moment this morning lingered with me.

Small, social graces. Learned by watching.

She has watched me.

She has watched me make coffee and breakfast and lunch and get up and go do my responsibilities. She has watched me serve others before serving myself. I didn’t have to tell her to do something kind for others. She just did it.

That makes me smile… gives me hope.

…hope that my daughter has learned all that she can from me. The rest is going to happen on its own by her living life. She’s turning into a remarkable woman!

My Grace-full pause: Sometimes I wonder if I did enough as a parent. I wonder if I was good enough. I criticize myself. Today I said to myself,

You did good.

Today I gave myself a little grace.

  1. Beautifully said!! I just read it to my wife and she got teary-eyed. She said, “That was perfect! Exactly how I feel” (now she’s talking more while I type and telling stories about our youngest – young lady)
